But her biggest achievements was being able to communicate out loud. One of Helen's major achievements was going to Radcliffe college with her class. Helen learned proficient braille, which really helped her communicate, understand people and learn about objects. She went to many schools with Miss Sullivan such as the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf, the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and the Perkins Institute for the Blind which was recommended by a friend, Alexander Graham Bell. Helen was determined to communicate out loud, Helen worked to understand people's throat vibrations, and the vibrations of music. But later that month Helen learned sign language, a language that would change Helen's views on life forever.Īs Helen's life went on Helen started to attend formal schooling. Helen got very frustrated and threw temper tantrums almost every hour. After arriving at Helen's home Miss Sullivan began to teach Helen to spell certain words and objects. She didn't know it then but Miss Sullivan would teach her reading, writing and even communicating out loud. Then on March 3rd 1887 Miss Anne Sullivan came into Helen's life. Helen had over 60 "home signs", which were signs that Helen made up and only her family understood. Her only ways of communication were signing with the chef's 7 year-old daughter. Helen spend her childhood in a silent, dark world. Helen Keller was left blind and deaf from either scarlet fever or meningitis. She spent her time exploring her house and learning about how the world worked. The first 19 months of her life, Helen was a normal child. Helen Keller was born June 27th, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Not only was Helen Keller deaf and blind, but she is still an inspiration to people today. Helen Adams Keller has impacted society greater than anyone else of her time.
